Introduced for the 1996 model year, the second-generation SR II Viper featured a switch to dual rear exit exhaust pipes and was 60 lbs. lighter than its predecessor thanks to many steel components being replaced with aluminum items. The GTS was released as a new coupe version later in the same model year with a "double-bubble" roof design similar to the Shelby Daytona.
